Loz seems like a 'gen' guy.

As in business, Twitter provides smaller players in the political arena with the opportunity to get their word out to a larger audience.

Hi Graeme
Yes only Loz appears to have grasped what value social media can bring to the by election. There are still a lot of the population who think traditionally about getting messages across, that includes the political parties. My view is, the by election is about the voters not the candidate. Social media can be used to show how in tune with everyday life the candidate is.
Imagine a young family man, who spends hours on Facebook with his mates. Then he's interrupted from his precious time on the computer by a knock at the door and a candidate wants to know how he'll be voting. He's not likely to be very happy. About as popular as Jehovas Witnesses.
The alternative is that the political party become visible daily on Facebook - photos of voters with the candidate, videos of the candidate meeting voters, amusing clips from the week. The voter sees this, recognises several people, shares it & decides to opt in to the Labour party's FB page because they're offering him something of interest. The contact has been made by him not by them.

@LozKaye is the Pirate Party UK candidate.

From what I can see, I think Debbie Abrahams' Twitter account is probably being managed by Labour and not herself.

Either that or she and Mr. Nuttall haven't grasped the concept of Twitter, Abrahams not responding to tweets and Nuttall not following anyone!

Thanks for the comment Rebecca. I'd agree with you however Twitter and Facebook will eventually become mainstream for a lot more people. Generating good content on Twitter and Facebook will get picked up by the national press who are scouring all channels for good news.
I've just watched an excellent video of Loz Kaye, posted on Twitter, as he was interviewed whilst walking along a street. His personality shone through and now he is a lot more prominent in my mind.
To be brutally honest, based on what I've seen so far, I just don't think any of the political parties know how to use social media. After all, it was a big factor in helping to reelect Barak Obama.

It shouldn't be forgotten that Twitter + Facebook are probably unknown to most voters.
There was a ton of Twitter and Facebook activity during the 2010 GE campaign, but the TV debates were watched infinitely more people and are considered to have had a far greater impact.

Thanks for the post Danfox. Strangely, I'd not found Loz when searching for all candidates. Looking at his activity in Twitter I agree he puts the others to shame. I'll watch his tweets over the next few days and certainly look to feature him in a final blog on the by election.

Are we not mentioning those candidates whose efforts in Twitter etc. have been much more pro-active and positive, for example Loz Kaye for the Pirate Party? http://www.twitter.com/LozKaye

Phil
You may be right. On the other hand I'd imagine if one party grabbed the social media space the others would soon follow. Seems like an opportunity. Thanks Phil

It's very surprising. Unless, the parties feel that most active part of the electorate do not engage with these kind of media.

That said you would think that it would be an opportunity to engage with those who feel disenfranchised.

Really interesting issue highlighted. Good work.
